Focus: HOPE is a private, nonprofit civil and human rights organization. It was founded on March 8, 1968, in one of Detroit's most economically depressed areas, by the late Father William T. Cunningham and Executive Director Eleanor Josaitis. Its many programs aim to address issues relating to poverty, hunger, lack of education, and racial divisiveness.
In the 1980s, Focus: HOPE transformed itself into a nationally recognized center for education and training. Over the years Focus: Hope has grown into an internationally recognized technical training center and human rights organization. Many visitors come to Focus: HOPE from around the world to tour the facilities and take back information and ideas on how Focus: HOPE has accomplished what it has. Focus: HOPE has directly changed the lives of thousands of people throughout metro Detroit, along with changing the lives of thousands more around the world with the knowledge that they have given their visitors to take home with them.
On May 26, 1997, Father Cunningham, the cofounder and inspiration of Focus: HOPE, passed away. Since that time, under the leadership of Eleanor Josaitis and the hard work of the staff and volunteers, Focus: HOPE has rededicated itself to fulfilling Father Cunningham's vision. Its many programs cover low-income pregnant and postpartum mothers, infants and preschool children, before and after-school programs, FAST TRACK learning, Machinist Training Institute, Center for Advanced Technologies and Food for Seniors program, are part of Focus: HOPE's mission. The staff and volunteers of Focus: HOPE are certainly carrying Father Cunningham's vision to new highs.
