Basic Internet Slide 1, What is the Internet?
    Enormous Amount of Information

    Common Entry to Everyone
(All you need is a connection)

    "Level Playing Ground"
(1 person or 1,000 person office can see same thing)

You can't hurt the Internet (Don't be Afraid).

No One is looking at you (Try Different Things).

NO One place to look for ALL Information contained on Internet.

The Internet (or 'World Wide Web') is a collection of Information, some portion of the information will be of value to you and some has no value to you. It is the finding of the information that you want that is the hardest part of working with the Web. Because of the volume of what is there currently and the amount that is being added each day, there is no one place to look to find all the information that you want.

In dealing with the Web the first things to learn are:

    a) You can't hurt / destroy or harm the Internet! (Don't be afraid of it)
    b) No one is looking at you! (Try different things)
    c) It will frustrate you! (Just keep trying different things)

Because of the volume and the ease of getting at the information, there are more and more companies using the Web to conduct parts of their business. The uses include some of the basic things like personal communications (email / fax / voice), finding prospective employees, advertising, marketing, viewing competition's information, learning new procedures and many other things.

If you are connected to the Internet, it doesn't matter if you are a one person office or an International firm with thousands of employees you can view the same information and have the advantages of that information. IF YOU USE IT, IF YOU DON'T USE THE INTERNET TO YOUR ADVANTAGE, SOMEONE ELSE WILL.

In using the Internet there are a few basic terms that you should be aware of, not only because they are used in different parts of these classes. But they will more than likely come up when talking to other people about the Internet.

    Internet
    WWW
    World Wide Web
The term Internet, WWW or World Wide Web is interchangeable. They all refer to the collection of information that is accessible on the Internet.
Browser Computer software that is used to process information on WWW and put into format that you can view. Two of the major browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Explorer
Home Page The initial entry point for a company or individual's information.
Site All the information that one company has on their Internet location.
    Bookmark
    Favorite
An interchangeable term ('Bookmark' on Navigator, 'Favorite' on Explorer) that means to save an Internet address so you can get back to it easily.
General Search Engine Internet sites that let you search for other sites, which have information that you would like to view. This site will return other sites that have the information that you want in more detail. Note, no one search engine will reference ALL the information on the Internet.
    Specific Search Engine or
    Restricted Search Engine
This type of site is like the General Search Engine, except that instead of searching the Internet for your information, it looks at only what is on its own site. An example of this would be to go to a site that has only resumes and search for resumes that you want to view.
